Care instructions for figure skates and blades – How to make your equipment last longer
Share
Proper care of your figure skates extends their lifespan, improves performance, and saves money in the long run. Here are our best tips for taking care of both skates and blades.
SKATE CARE
After every skating session:
- Always wipe the skates dry after use
- Loosen the laces properly and pull the tongue forward for better ventilation
- Always take them out of the skate bag – store them in a well-ventilated place between uses
- If you skate without socks, lift out the insole so it dries faster
Storage:
- Never store them near a heat source (radiator) – heat dries out the leather and removes its natural oils
- Avoid storing them in a bag in the car on hot summer days – this can be devastating to their durability
- Always take them out of the skate bag when you are not transporting them – this reduces moisture and extends the life of the leather
Maintenance:
Laces: Replace them regularly. New laces are elastic and keep the heel against the heel counter. When the elasticity disappears, the foot slides forward and presses against the toe.
Leather treatment: Treat the leather heel and outsole regularly with a water-repellent product (leather grease or beeswax-based SnoSeal).
How to:
- Wait at least 12 hours after skating so the skates are completely dry
- Heat the sole with a hair dryer for approximately 5 minutes
- Apply a generous amount of SnoSeal
- Rub it in with a clean cloth
- Polish
BLADE CARE
Guards:
- Always use hard guards when wearing your skates
- We recommend two-piece models that stay securely in place when you walk
- NOTE! Stretchy guards (e.g. Edea One piece) do not fit all blade sizes. For size 8 1/2 (Edea 225 and 230) – choose Rockerz or two-piece guards instead
After skating:
- Remove excess snow before putting on the guards – blades can begin to rust within 20 minutes if they are wet
- Dry the blades and mounting area with a skate towel
- Use soft guards during transport to protect the blades and surrounding materials
- Remove soft guards during storage
Maintenance:
- Check the screws regularly – make sure they are screwed in securely
- Sharpening: Sharpen when you no longer get sufficient grip. Keep notes on the latest sharpening
- Only have your skates sharpened by a sharpener who is knowledgeable about figure-skating blades – ask your club where to have them sharpened
- Avoid sports stores – they often lack the proper equipment and expertise
- Protect the sharpened surface by lightly oiling it – this prevents rust and corrosion
